Senate Extends Flood Program for One Year, Now It Goes to the House

On Tuesday night the Senate unanimously passed legislation extending the current National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until Sept. 30, 2011. The measure now goes to the House and if not passed will expire at the end of this month.

S. 3814, the “Flood Insurance Extension Act of 2010,” was sponsored by Sen. David Vitter, R-La.

“Now that the Senate has acted, it's incumbent upon the House to pass the extension before they break for the mid-term election,” said Blain Rethmeier, a spokesman for the American Insurance Association. “We have every expectation that will happen and look forward to the program being in place for one year.”

Marguerite Tortorello, senior vice president, public affairs, for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, last night called the decision “an encouraging first step.”

“We urge the House of Representatives to approve the Senate's bill without delay,” she said, adding, “Absent House action, this vital program that protects 5.5 million Americans will expire at the end of the month.”
