The federal flood program, which has already expired several times this year, including for the entire month of June, will lose its authority Sept. 30 unless Congress acts to extend it.

This week, the U.S. Senate approved a bill introduced by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and others that would extend the flood program by one year. Previously, the extension has been attached to larger bills seeking to extend a number of programs, and the flood program authorization has gotten mired in politics.

Th House of Representatives is scheduled to take up the measure this afternoon and is expected to give its approval.
