Report Shows Insurance Fraud Convictions Up in NY

The New York State Insurance Department's Fraud Bureau report for the first half of 2007-09 shows that there were 323 arrests recorded for the first half of 2009, compared with 344 for the same period in 2008 and 388 in 2007.

The number of criminal convictions obtained by prosecutors in Frauds Bureau cases totaled 281 for the first six months of 2009, versus 160 for the first half of 2008 and 245 in 2007.

The number of reported insurance frauds is also up. Through the first of 2009, the Frauds Bureau received 12,961 reports of suspected. There were 11,260 in the same period last year and 11,549 in 2007.
