US life insurance company MetLife is in negotiations to purchase American Life Insurance Co (Alico) from insurance giant American International Group, Inc. (AIG) in a deal that could amount to as much as $15 billion, say sources close to the negotiation.

Sources say the purchase could possibly be funded via a combination of payments, with approximately $8 billion in stock and the rest in cash, although the ratios could change.

Spokespersons at neither MetLife nor AIG camps have commented on the deal at this point.
