Latest Hurricane Watch: Earl Downgraded to Category 1 as Cape Cod, L.I. Brace for Hit

By 11:00am EST on Friday, Hurricane Earl has weakened to a Category 1 storm, with sustained winds of 85 mph, down from 105 mph at 8 a.m. ET, the hurricane center said.

According to forecasters eastern Long Island and Cape Cod appear to be at greatest risk as the storm continued its northward trek. Portions of the mid-Atlantic also were facing potential fallout.

Earlier Earl lashed the North Carolina coastline with high winds and 35-foot waves.
