Hub International Makes Several Acquisitions

Insurance brokerage Hub International Limited  announced several acquisitions on Tuesday, including that of Santa Monica, California-based insurance brokerage firm Sander A. Kessler & Associates, Inc. (Kessler).

Published on January 5, 2011

Founded in 1956, Kessler is one of the largest, independent full-service insurance agencies in California. This transaction will significantly expand Hub California’s presence in the Los Angeles area. Kessler currently arranges insurance programs for a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, seafood, meat processing, security guards, recycling, and the solar industry. They are well-known for placing workers’ compensation risks, among other lines of coverage, for these industries.

Kirk Christ, President, Hub California, commented that “Kessler is a highly regarded firm that will help us further our growth in the Los Angeles area.  Kessler's impressive history and staff make them a great fit for our operations.  Their specific focus and emphasis in workers' compensation, employee benefits and health care aligns them well with our existing practice groups and will bring tremendous value to Hub. We look forward to working with the Kessler team and continuing to serve their clients with quality coverage and service.”

Hub also acquired Hall-Conway-Jackson, Inc. (HCJ) and the assets of Cascade Insurance Group, Inc. (Cascade), Bothell, Washington-based insurance brokerage and employee benefit firms, respectively.

HCJ was founded in 1935, and is one of the largest retail insurance brokerages in the Pacific Northwest region, offering middle market property and casualty, employee benefits and personal lines products and services to a broad customer base. In 1989, they formed a joint venture with Cascade to manage and develop both companies’ group insurance business. Jointly, they are a full service brokerage with specialty program expertise in professional liability, restaurants, product recall, and taverns. Their broad capabilities extend to large commercial property developers, shopping centers, manufacturing and habitational real estate accounts. The acquisition of HCJ and Cascade will continue to diversify Hub Northwest’s current customer base, which includes numerous construction companies throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, given the firm’s deep expertise in construction insurance and surety products.

“This group is undoubtedly one of the top independent brokers in the Pacific Northwest, with a 75 year history of providing insurance services to some of the area’s top companies and individuals,” said Andy Prill. “We are thrilled to join forces with Tom, Bob, and the rest of the talented individuals at HCJ and Cascade and welcome them to our team. This acquisition represents a strong growth platform outside of the construction industry for Hub Northwest and together we look forward to providing their clients with the finest insurance products and services in the region.”

The third acquisition by Hub was Davis & Graeber Insurance Services, Inc., (D&G), full-service agency in Redlands, California that was established in 1923 and offers commercial lines, employee benefits, and personal lines products and services. “Davis and Graeber is a highly respected firm with a long history of success within the Inland Empire,” said Kirk Christ, President of Hub California. “Peter, Marty and Beth share Hub’s vision of continuing to build our operations through organic growth.  We are excited to welcome the D&G team to ours, and look forward to serving their customers with the finest services and products available to market, in addition to the value-added resources that Hub provides as a top ten national brokerage.”

Lastly, Hub has purchased the assets of Benefit Resources, Inc. (BRI), a Colorado Springs, Colorado-based retail employee benefits insurance brokerage firm. BRI has an excellent reputation as the leading Employee Benefits brokerage in Colorado Springs, and will provide Hub with a strong growth platform in the region,” said Matt Coleman. “We are pleased to welcome George and Jeff to the Hub team, two highly respected and well known professionals in the Employee Benefits arena. By joining forces, the talented staff at BRI will give Hub an even stronger presence in the territory. We look forward to serving their customers with the quality offerings and consultative expertise of a global insurance brokerage firm.”

Headquartered in Chicago, Hub International Limited is a leading insurance brokerage providing a broad array of property, casualty, risk management, employee benefits, investment and wealth management products across North America.
