Golub has served as a director on AIG's board since May, according to an AIG spokesperson. He succeeds Edward Liddy, who is retiring as chairman and chief executive officer.

AIG previously said that it planned to split the roles of chairman and CEO upon Liddy's departure.

“Harvey is a terrific partner, and we are very much looking forward to working together,” said Robert Benmosche, whom AIG earlier this week named as president and CEO. “We have a tremendous opportunity to realize the true value of AIG's many great businesses for the benefit of all of our stakeholders, including clients, employees, and the U.S. government.”
