The flurry of over 150 tornadoes that touched down in a number of US Midwest states last week could cause insured losses of up to $2bn, according to modeling agency Eqecat.

The tornadoes which struck between 28 February and 3 March, predominantly in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama may cost insurers between $1 billion and $2 billion, said Eqecat, adding that the numbers were not final.

At least 13 states were affected by the storms.
