Chartis Inc., a world leader in property-casualty and general insurance, on Tuesday announced that Thomas Scherer has been named Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Chartis, responsible for Chartis' worldwide legal operations. The appointment continues Chartis' progress toward global integration and further strengthens its worldwide management team.
"Tom has a proven track record of working effectively to resolve complex litigation and regulatory issues," said Kristian P. Moor, President and Chief Executive Officer of Chartis. “We are delighted to have Tom play a key role within our global management team as his appointment further strengthens our world-class capabilities.”
Mr. Scherer has managed large legal, compliance and operations staffs in reinsurance and financial
services organizations over the course of his distinguished career. Most recently, Mr. Scherer worked for seven years at Swiss Re Group where he served as Special Litigation Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. While at Swiss Re, he also served as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for the Financial Markets Division and Group Deputy General Counsel. Prior to Swiss Re, Mr. Scherer worked at Morgan Stanley in New York as Compliance Director and Managing Director, and in Hong Kong as Compliance Director, Litigation Counsel and Vice President for Morgan Stanley Asia Limited. Mr. Scherer served in the U.S. military, with his last posting as aide-de-camp for the Commander of the Second Armored Division (Forward) in Garlstedt, Germany. He is a graduate of Princeton University and holds a J.D. Degree from Columbia University’s School of Law.
