Captives appear to be winning the waiting game, as underwriting income increased, profitability jumped by 49% and dividends rose by 73% for a composite of 194 U.S. captive insurance entities followed by A.M. Best in 2010, according to the A.M. Best Co. Special Report, U.S. Captive Insurance--Market Review, that is available in this week's BestWeek U.S./Canada.
The outlook for the captive industry remains stable. While the outlook on captives' standard commercial carrier peers is negative; rated captives have distinct advantages. Pure captive companies can withstand a softening market because of their financial flexibility, which results from their relationships with their parent companies, leaving them well positioned for the inevitable turn in the market, according to the report.
