Assets under advisement for global professional services company Towers Watson's implemented investment services have passed the $50 billion mark. These services combine investment strategy and asset/liability modeling (ALM) capabilities with the fiduciary management of investment portfolio and are designed to appeal to plans of all sizes, particularly those seeking a transparent approach for total plan management.
"Implemented investment services address the wide gap that often exists between many companies' investment strategies and their governance capabilities, especially among the smaller funds, which are particularly strained," said Carl Hess, Towers Watson global head of investment. Hess also noted that sponsors of both small and large asset pools often lack the resources, time and expertise to effectively manage their assets.
"Clients are attracted to the Towers Watson solution due to the provision of exceptional clarity of performance goals versus liabilities and a dynamic relationship with fiduciaries," said Hess, who added that Towers Watson has served clients with discretionary services for more than a decade. "Funds using the offering are able to streamline operational management, and it also makes Towers Watson explicitly accountable as never before."
Hess also pointed out that depending on the need, this approach makes the widest use of investment tools and solutions — particularly liability driven investing (LDI), buy-ins and other insurance solutions. Given the recent demand for these, in the U.S. alone, Towers Watson's assets under advisement using this approach have increased more than $5 billion in the last year.
The Towers Watson investment governance solution — based on seminal research produced jointly with Oxford University — includes a high degree of engagement, the provision of maximum access to investment tools and solutions, an integrated view of risk and return versus liabilities and effectiveness and timeliness of decision making and implementation.
