We spoke with Shawn Fabors, Chief Sales Officer and Senior Vice President of Sales & Operations of RISC, to discuss the continued success of the Dallas-based wholesale brokerage and Program Administrator. RISC is licensed in 50 states and writes $100 million in premium. Our Contractor Select Programs offers exclusive insurance casualty solutions for contractors of all types – from energy to roofing, fire equipment and fire sprinkler and demolition contractors. Programs are available on a non-admitted basis, except for the demolition insurance product, which is offered on an admitted basis.
Shawn oversees sales, marketing, carrier relationships, and distribution. Prior to joining RISC in 2008, he held sales, branch management and business development positions at national property and casualty insurers and financial services companies.
“We had a very good year in 2012 with growth up 20% and are poised to have similar results in 2013,” said Shawn. “We have an excellent underwriting team in place with the expertise to provide agents and brokers solutions for their clients. Brad Drown is the head of underwriting for all our Contractor Select Programs, providing us with nearly four decades of insurance experience. His career began with USF&G where he spent four years, and later he worked for American Re/Munich American Re as a Casualty Facultative Underwriter and Manager until joining us. His recent responsibilities at Munich were to manage six underwriters in the Dallas office, set strategies and marketing guidelines and market for new program business. In addition, he was responsible for underwriting, pricing, handling special exceptions, and relationship management. He had many significant accomplishments during his tenure at Munich/American Re and is as solid an individual and underwriter as you’ll find. He was given underwriting authority for all programs and is responsible for their profitability and underwriting authority.
“We also brought in Kirk Purswell to join Brad Drown and Gibb Harris as part of our underwriting team in our Oil & Gas program”. Kirk’s expertise includes quoting, binding and issuance of hard-to-place GL and Property risks with a special emphasis on the Oil & Gas industry. We fully expect to see a minimum growth of 20% this year in this sector.”
Over the last year, RISC has also maximized its efficiencies by consolidating the management of all programs under one leadership team. This allows them to enhance the uniformity and level of support provided to agents. “With the changes we made, we’re able to better cross train our staff and work even more efficiently as a team. In fact, we’re now issuing policies within 48 hours consistently,” said Shawn. “Our underwriters go the extra mile to get an account written.”
What’s more, RISC streamlined the submission process with a designated email for all its programs for greater efficiency and ease of doing business. Plans are also underway to improve on claims and loss control services for interested associations and policyholders.
