GMI Capitalizes on Auto Expertise to Launch Norman Specialty Insurance Group, Expanding Footprint into Trucking, Emergency Transportation, Car Dealerships and Other Niches

IIn November, Managing General Agency GMI Insurance, based in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, announced the launch of wholesale brokerage Norman Specialty Insurance Group. Family owned GMI was founded by Norman Trudel in 1980 and is known for their expertise in the transportation industry, delivering four unique programs: Business Auto, Auto Rental Fleet, Used Auto Dealers, and Auto Lease. Today, his sons and daughter, Mark, Carter, Michael, and Karen run the company. Norman Specialty Insurance Group, named after their father, was created to complement other lines for the auto business they are writing and to fill a void for niches that didn’t fit into their programs. We spoke with Karen Trudel, COO of GMI, about their new venture.

I“We saw an opportunity with our auto experience for us to broaden our reach into other areas,” explained Karen. Norman Specialty is a natural extension of our seasoned GMI operation to complement our core auto business program. We can round out our programs with additional product lines and enter into new markets on a wholesale basis.”

Norman Specialty already has appointments with 10 A-rated admitted carriers. “Our goal is to capitalize on GMI Insurance’s strong auto heritage, experienced staff and extensive network of industry contacts to put Norman Specialty on the map by mid-2013,” said Karen. “What’s more, we also see Norman Specialty as an incubation place for developing new programs, working with carrier partners that offer good coverages, prices, and geographic reach for specific targeted classes of business. ”

GMI brought in Dawn Argue as Managing Director of Norman Specialty to bring their vision into fruition. Dawn’s background includes working for several Philadelphia brokerages and a managing general agency. 

“We’re looking for tough classes to write, including trucking, emergency medical transportation, new auto ventures, small tow truck operators, and used car dealerships. When agents think of wheels, we want them to look to us,” said Karen.
