Florida House Panel Votes Down Legislation to Combat Auto Insurance Fraud

The Florida House Health and Human Services Committee voted down legislation that would have sought to reduce auto-insurance fraud.

Even with a concerted effort on the behalf of state officials, insurers, and consumer groups such as the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud and the Sunshine Alliance to Ease Fraud, the House Subcommittee on Health Care and Human Services voted down the bill by a 9 to 8 margin.

The vote drew flak from state officials, insurers and advocacy groups that supported the measure.

"It is very clear that so much of what is being done in PIP clinics is fraud, and it is costing the honest consumers $1 billion a year. There are folks making millions of dollars on this and they worked like the dickens to defeat these bills," said Sam Miller, executive vice president of the Florida Insurance Council.
