Upon his retirement, all of us at ProgramBusiness.com would like to extend our thanks to Richard S. Rohde for his many contributions to the insurance industry.
Richard Rohde, has recently announced his decision to retire from Arrowhead General Insurance Agency, Inc. effective June 30, 2008. Arrowhead is one of the country’s largest and most highly regarded privately held agencies and is based in San Diego, CA.
While recently recalling his time at Arrowhead, Rohde stated that “It has been a truly rewarding experience collaborating with all my associates at Arrowhead to develop our programs and the supporting business teams and especially working with Pat Kilkenny, Arrowhead’s Chairman and founder.”
Rohde joined Arrowhead in January of 2000 and has been President of Arrowhead’s Commercial Business Group since March of 2001. The Commercial Business Group is comprised of a Specialty Contractor and Commercial Auto Program in six western states along with a Contract and Miscellaneous Surety Program in eleven western states. Under his leadership, the Commercial Business Group grew over 300% exceeding $100 million in written premiums and consistently produced the greatest return on revenue and profitability in the Group’s history.
Rohde’s early insurance career began as an Insurance Service Representative with the Auto Club of Southern California in their East Los Angeles office and followed by a move to become the Agency Claims Manager for the Minnesota State Automobile Association in Minneapolis. He then joined Federated Mutual Insurance Company as a District Manager in Minnesota where he remained until he purchased an ownership interest in a small Independent Agency in Minneapolis which was later sold and he returned to Southern California.
For 25 years preceding Arrowhead, Rohde was with Barney and Barney, a large regional Independent Agency based in San Diego. He became a General Partner in 1980 and ultimately the Managing Principal responsible for various business segments including Commercial Property and Casualty, Personal Insurance, Surety, Consulting, Wholesale and Specialty Insurance as well as the Commercial and Personal Claims operations. A local publication at the time referred to Rohde as the Barney and Barney “Rainmaker” and during this period the company tripled in size to more than 130 employees and over $300 million in premiums.
Rohde has also been active in various industry organizations. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers (CIAB) where he has served in various roles including Co-Chair of the National PAC, Vice-Chair of the Operational Oversight Committee and Co-Chair of the Education Development Committee. He was previously a member of the Board of Directors and on various committees of the Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West (IBA West), the IBA West Service Corporation, and the Western Association of Insurance Brokers.
He holds the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation from the National Society of Certified Insurance Counselors and was a member of their Board of Governors. During his time with the National Society he served in many positions which included being a member of the Executive Committee and ultimately Chairman of the Board.
He is an alumnus of the Minnesota Metropolitan State College as well as the Advanced Agency Management Program at Claremont College and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
Rohde’s future plans include being active with other industry and business interests and continuing his involvement with community service programs. However, he hasn’t ruled out taking some time off to spend with family and friends.
