Lawyers Protector's Plan (LPP®): The Attorney's Preferred Program of Choice

In this issue, we're highlighting Lawyers Protector's Plan (LPP®), a division of B&B Protector Plans, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Brown & Brown, which is ranked by Business Insurance magazine as the seventh largest insurance intermediary in the United States and the seventh largest in the world. LPP® offers Professional Liability coverage for attorneys through its carrier partner, Navigators Insurance Company, an international specialty insurance holding company with insurance company operations, underwriting management companies, and operations at Lloyd's of London.

We spoke with Program Manager Laura Simon about what makes LPP® the attorney's preferred program of choice. Laura has been with Brown & Brown and LPP® for nearly 11 years, having established an in-house claims division for the program in 2000. In 2007 she became Program Manager, and works side by side with a staff of 28 whose expertise runs deep in underwriting, operations, claims, and marketing.

"A key differentiator distinguishing us from many other programs in the current lawyers market is that we've specialized in Lawyers' Professional Liability insurance for nearly three decades. We'll be celebrating our 28th anniversary in 2011," said Laura. "We created the program in 1983 specifically for attorneys and continue to enhance and expand it to meet their evolving needs."

What's more, the staff at LPP® is comprised of law professionals and insurance experts. "We have underwriters with nearly 30 years of Professional Liability experience, and staff members with 10 years or more of Lawyers Professional Liability claims experience," said Laura. "Each department within the LPP® – claims, underwriting and marketing – is led by attorneys with unique insight and sensitivity that's necessary to address the issues of lawyers and law firms and the unique needs of firms of various sizes."

In 2009, LPP® partnered with A-rated carrier Navigators, offering one of the leading national Lawyers' Professional Liability insurance programs in the country. "We developed a competitive national comprehensive program with Navigators that delivers a strong product and includes such additional features as enhanced Supplemental Payments, Security Incident Reimbursement, and Early Claims Resolution Incentive," explained Laura. In October 2010, the program with Navigators was expanded to include coverage for law firms with up to 34 attorneys. "We worked together with Navigators over the last year to expand our distribution, and extending the program to a larger market segment is a way of accomplishing this," said Laura.

LPP® clients, along with top-notch coverage, also receive added-value benefits, including membership in the Lawyers' Purchasing Group with access to risk management services, continuing legal education, online forms and checklists to help insulate against claims, and newsletters for cutting-edge developments in law firm practice management. "We're looking to expand the Lawyer's Purchasing Group to provide additional risk management benefits and add additional value in providing information about emerging trends and topics and legal malpractice. We also hope in the next year to offer clients customized webinars on relevant, cutting edge topics like those emerging from technology," said Laura.

Premium financing is also available to clients through Premium Assignment Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of SunTrust Banks, Inc., a super-regional bank holding company with over $125 billion in assets.

The program is available throughout the country (excluding certain states) to agents on an open-access basis. Marketing materials and giveaways co-branded with Navigators are available to agents. "We also provide training and support to new agents so that they become familiar with the program and policy forms," said Laura.
